About MedicalCostDB
Helping patients make informed healthcare decisions with transparent cost data.
Our Mission
Healthcare pricing in America is notoriously opaque. The same procedure can cost $5,000 at one facility and $50,000 at another in the same city, and patients often don't know the price until they receive the bill. MedicalCostDB exists to change that.
We compile and present medical procedure cost data in a clear, accessible format so patients can make informed decisions about their healthcare. Our goal is to empower every patient with the pricing knowledge they need to find fair prices, negotiate bills, and choose the right insurance coverage.
Our Data Sources
MedicalCostDB aggregates pricing data from multiple sources:
- CMS Hospital Pricing Data -- Medicare reimbursement rates and hospital chargemaster data published under federal transparency rules
- Industry Surveys -- Pricing data from healthcare industry research firms and professional organizations
- Insurance Claims Data -- Anonymized and aggregated claims data from published studies and reports
- Market Research -- Analysis of published pricing from healthcare facilities and independent imaging/surgery centers
Our Methodology
Costs presented on MedicalCostDB represent national averages adjusted for state-level cost-of-living and healthcare market conditions. We use a cost index derived from CMS geographic practice cost indices (GPCI) and regional healthcare spending data to provide state-adjusted estimates.
Insurance cost estimates are based on average plan parameters (deductibles, copays, coinsurance rates) for each plan type. Actual out-of-pocket costs vary significantly based on individual plan details.
